SLB Q3 Earnings: Revenue Growth, Cash Flow and Dividend Questions

SLB’s revenue recovery is encouraging, but cash generation and the cost of shareholder payouts deserve equal attention. The latest results show why higher sales alone do not establish that profits or investment returns will keep improving.

Review window: October 23, 2026, 07:03–19:03 UTC. SLB’s original announcement is dated October 23; its distributed release appeared at 6:50 a.m. EDT (10:50 UTC). Results cover the quarter ended September 30, not activity occurring on the publication date.

What happened: sales rose while earnings remained mixed

SLB (NYSE: SLB) reported revenue of $9.449 billion, up 6% year on year. Net income attributable to SLB was $735 million, down about 1%. GAAP earnings per share were $0.49; EPS excluding charges and credits was $0.64, up 16% from the second quarter but down 7% from a year earlier. The figures appear in its SEC-filed earnings release.

Compare the same time periods

“Sequential” means compared with the previous quarter. Year-on-year means compared with the same quarter last year. A business can recover from a weak quarter while remaining below its earlier earnings level. GAAP uses standard accounting rules; adjusted figures exclude specified items and require their own scrutiny.

Why it happened: acquisitions affect the growth story

ChampionX contributed a full quarter in 2026 versus only two months in the comparable 2025 period. SLB said global revenue growth excluding the acquisition’s impact was 2%. Its adjusted EBITDA margin was 21.9%, versus 23.1% a year earlier.

Interpretation: Buying another business expands reported sales without all of that increase coming from growth in existing operations. EBITDA is profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, with further company adjustments here. It helps compare operations but leaves out costs that shareholders still bear. The margin comparison suggests that revenue growth has not translated into stronger profitability on that measure.

What it means for personal money and investing

Follow cash after business investment

Quarterly operating cash flow was $1.510 billion. Deducting $485 million of capital expenditure, $114 million of APS investments in oil and gas projects and $83 million of capitalized exploration-data costs gives $828 million of free cash flow. This follows SLB’s non-GAAP definition.

Compare payouts with cash generation

Share repurchases of $656 million plus dividends paid of $439 million totaled $1.095 billion, exceeding that quarter’s free cash flow by $267 million.

Investor interpretation: This is a cash-allocation comparison, not a forecast of a dividend cut. A company can use cash balances or borrowing, and quarterly cash flows fluctuate. The calculation also omits other financing and investment movements. Check several quarters, debt and upcoming obligations before judging payout capacity. Buybacks are generally more flexible than regular dividends.

What to watch next

Watch acquisition-adjusted growth, operating margins and conversion of earnings into cash. Working capital—the cash tied up in routine operations—can move cash flow in either direction. Look for sustainable improvement rather than assuming a temporary cash release will repeat.

For household budgets, an oilfield-services earnings report does not directly predict gasoline prices. For investors, energy-company spending, project timing and financing needs matter alongside oil prices. Any recovery thesis remains conditional. Consult the original company release and financial tables for definitions and risk factors before comparing forecasts with future results.
